Chetan Bhagat, born on April 22, 1974, in New Delhi, India, was raised in a traditional Punjabi Hindu family. His father, Chandra Shekhar Bhagat, held the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Indian Army, and his mother, Kusum Bhagat, worked as a scientist at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi. Chetan Bhagat tied the knot with Anusha Suryanarayan in 1998 after crossing paths with her during their college years at IIM. They are parents to twin sons, Shyam Bhagat and Ishaan Bhagat.

Chetan attended the Army Public School in Dhaula Kuan. During his school years, around the age of 15, he was an average student. However, it was during this time that his passion for writing took root. He started contributing articles to his school’s literary magazine, and the experience of seeing his name in print as a writer motivated him to continue honing his writing skills.

In 1995, Chetan Bhagat earned a B. Tech. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. Subsequently, he pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a focus on marketing at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), graduating in 1997. After completing his MBA in 1997, Chetan Bhagat secured a position at Peregrine Investments Holdings in Canada through campus placement. Unfortunately, the company closed down within six months, leading to him losing his job. Undeterred, he then joined Goldman Sachs as an investment banker in Hong Kong, despite dissatisfaction with his boss. Interestingly, the unfavorable boss served as inspiration for the antagonist in his second novel, One Night @ the Call Center.

While at Goldman Sachs, Chetan Bhagat spent a significant amount of time writing, ultimately completing his first novel, Five Point Someone. After two years, Rupa Publications accepted his manuscript for publication. By 2006, he had risen to the position of Vice President at Deutsche Bank in Hong Kong. In 2008, he returned to India and joined Deutsche Bank’s distressed-assets team in Mumbai. That same year, his third novel, The 3 Mistakes of My Life, was published and quickly sold 700,000 copies in three months.
