Personal Life
Remo D’Souza, originally Ramesh Gopi Nair, was born on April 2, 1974, in Bangalore, into a Hindu family. His father, Gopi Nair, holds the position of Chief in the Indian Air Force, while his mother, Madhaviyamma, is a homemaker. Ramesh has four sisters.
During his early years, Remo was a diligent student who aspired to become an athlete. He received his primary education at Air Force School in Jamnagar, Gujarat, completing his 12th-grade education there. However, during his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) board exams, he had an epiphany: he had lost interest in academics and had developed a strong passion for dancing. Remo acquired his dance skills through self-learning, watching movies, and dance videos. Consequently, he decided to leave his studies and pursue a career in dance, relocating to Mumbai to chase his dream.
D’Souza married Lizelle Watkins (now D’Souza), an Anglo-Indian hailing from Mumbai. Lizelle is a renowned costume designer, well-known for her work on various television shows. Following his conversion to Christianity, Ramesh Gopi Nair adopted the name Remo D’Souza. The couple is blessed with two sons, Dhruv and Gabriel.
Remo experienced a heart attack on December 11, 2020, requiring immediate surgery in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai. Following a successful recovery, he has resumed his professional duties.
Career
After arriving in Mumbai, he established a dance academy called Super Brats. Soon after, in collaboration with three close friends, Remo expanded his institute, opening two more branches. It was during an All-India Dance Competition that Remo’s team claimed first place, catching the attention of industry insiders. As a result of this recognition, Remo successfully auditioned for his first major break in the world of dance, securing a role in Rangeela’s debut song, Rangeela Re (or Bollywood Dreams), under the direction of Ram Gopal Varma. His performance left such a positive impression that he was retained for all subsequent scenes, marking a pivotal moment in his career.
Following a year of assisting Ahmed Khan, Remo gained the confidence to venture into independent projects. It was Anubhav Sinha who entrusted him with his first music video, which happened to be for Sonu Nigam’s album, Deewana. Fortunately, the video became a massive hit, paving the way for Remo to collaborate on numerous other successful music videos alongside Anubhav and other directors. At one point, he even juggled the choreography for four music videos in a single day. He is also applauded for his choreographies in films like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Bajirao Mastani.
Regarding his acting career, Remo’s initial opportunity came from Hansal Mehta’s film, Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar, though it regrettably did not perform well at the box office. However, his true breakthrough arrived with Tum Bin and Kaante, and he choreographed the hit item number Ishq Samundar in the latter film. This marked a turning point in his career, and he subsequently became involved in various music videos and films.
In the realm of directing, Remo ventured into it with his first feature film, the comedy F.A.L.T.U, which garnered positive reviews from critics. His subsequent directorial projects included the 3D dance-centric films ABCD: Any Body Can Dance in 2013 and its 2015 sequel, Disney’s ABCD 2. In 2016, he directed A Flying Jatt and in 2018, Race 3, both of which faced disappointment at the box office. In 2020, Remo directed the third installment of the ABCD franchise, titled Street Dancer 3D.
Remo also made his television debut as a judge and mentor on the dance reality show Dance India Dance (DID), alongside fellow choreographers Terence Lewis and Geeta Kapoor. Additionally, he appeared on seasons 4 through 7 of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa with Indian actress Madhuri Dixit and director Karan Johar. Remo also assumed the role of the super judge on the prime-time dance show Dance Plus.
