Early Life & Background

Sahil Pandita has been on the move; from Kanpur to Bengaluru, then to Delhi and then to Pune. He has been to many places. Being a Kashmiri Pandit, Sahil’s family faced and lived during the stressful period of the Exodus of Kashmiri Hindus. His father was a government bank employee in Srinagar, but during the exodus and after surviving the camps, their source of income was also lost. After relocating to several houses, the family finally settled near a village in Chandigarh.

Sahil’s Approach was Different from Other Kids

He was not the typical studious child but a more innovative kid. He was more intrigued by hands-on activities, loved to explore things and spent more time outside the house than in the house.

Eventually, he decided to drop the school after completing 10th standard; which was a shock to his family and peers, obviously. However, his parents enrolled him for a Mechanical Engineering Diploma in Pune.

You guessed it right, he dropped out of it too, after 3 months.

It was 2011, and his parents had shifted to Hubli, Karnataka, he too left Pune and went to his family. There he decided to complete 12th class from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).

Earning Money was the Priority

However, his passion to earn money was so strong that before buying his books, he started job hunting, preferably looking for a call center job.

Being fluent in English speaking (credits to his father who speaks good English at home also), he believed call center job would be easy to get. However, after seeing a newspaper job ad of Clarks Inn Hotel in Hubli, Karnataka, he decided to try his hands there.

Without any experience he was appointed in the Hotel Operation Trainee Program at a salary of Rs 5,200 per month. His tasks were: drop and pick guests bags at the front office to their rooms, housekeeping services, cleaning beds, washing utensils, chopping vegetables, and washing toilets. All in all, everything that needs to be done in a hotel.

Later, he worked a similar job at Hotel Dennison and moved to Bangalore for better job opportunities.

In 2012, he secured a front-office assistant job at ITC Hotels. But Bengaluru’s rent situation was no different back then too. He was sharing a dorm sort of space with 14 boys with only 1 washroom and many bed bugs.

After working 14-15 hour shift, he do not want to return to the dorm, and started sleeping in the hotel bunker.

The Period of Learning

While working at the ITC Hotels, he was also learning about how the other hotel departments worked. Eventually, his hard work and efficiency was noticed. His management got him enrolled in the ITC Hospitality Management Institute. Under this program, students’ fees is covered, work opportunities at the hotel is provided, along with a stipend and 3-course meal thrice a day.

After that, he joined the Welcome Lead Program by ITC Hotels.

Then, in 2014, he secured the job of Team Lead at Hyatt Regency, Delhi with Rs 30k monthly salary. Within 4 months, he was promoted to Shift Manager Front Office, making him the youngest manager in Hyatt Hotels history.

He worked double shifts for this role but again he quit Hyatt and in January 2016, he joined Taj Hotels as duty manager.

In December 2016, he secured a job at a reputed asset management firm in India.
