About Nike

In 1964, Bill Bowerman, University of Oregon track coach, and his former athlete Phil Knight founded Blue Ribbons Sports (BRS) in Europe, Oregon. Initially, it was a distributor for Japanese shoemaker Onitsuka Tiger and company’s early years were based on grassroots sales.

From the car trunk, Knight sold shoes at track meets and in its first year, BRS sold 1,300 pairs of shoes, earning $8,000.

Then in 1971, BRS ended its partnership with Onitsuka Tiger and rebranded itself as Nike, Inc. It also introduced the “swoosh” logo which was designed by Carolyn Davidson for $35 only. Dedicated towards making a separate identity in the market, Bowerman created the famous “waffle” sole (by pouring rubber into the waffle iron).

Through 1970s and 1980s, Nike’s growth was fueled by savvy marketing, strategic athlete endorsements, and technological innovations. This included the signing of Michael Jordan in 1984, that led to the launch of Air Jordan line.

In 1980, the company went public, and entered the international markets like Australia and Canada with a wide range of shoe models. With the launch of Just Do It campaign in 1988, Nike’s brand image, identity, and global appeal was cemented.

Throughout 2000s, the company diversified by acquiring brands like Converse and Hurley but continued to innovate with digital products like Nike+ SportBand. Today, the company is one of the leading sportswear and athletic footwear brand in the world.
