In a story that’s left people equally divided—much like the couple’s electricity bill—a Gurgaon-based high-earning duo has gone viral for their meticulous bill-splitting habits. This has prompted reactions that range from admiration to outright confusion.
According to a viral LinkedIn post by Ayushmaan Kapoor, founder of matchmaking startup The Date Crew, the unnamed couple, with a combined annual income of over ₹60 lakh, reportedly manage every shared expense—down to Swiggy orders—through tools like Splitwise and Google Sheets. Kapoor stumbled across the couple’s budgeting strategy and took to LinkedIn to ask a burning question:
“Why split costs like roommates when you’re married?”
“They make ₹30L+ each. But still maintaining a Splitwise or Google Sheet for every single expense—rent, groceries, fuel, Swiggy, electricity. Each person ‘pays their share,’ like flatmates,” Kapoor posted.
He didn’t stop there. Comparing marriage to a startup (because naturally), Kapoor wrote, “When you marry someone, you’re essentially co-founding a company. And that company…is your life together.”
In his founder-meets-philosopher analogy, a strong marriage needs four main ingredients:
- A shared vision
- Defined responsibilities
- A joint financial strategy
- Regular “board meetings” (read: check-ins).
In Kapoor’s view, love works better with pooled finances rather than line items and formulas.
But not all commenters were buying his pitch.
A lively debate unfolded in the comment section, where many LinkedIn users—possibly armed with their own spreadsheets—defended the couple’s approach as modern and transparent.
“Tracking shared expenses doesn’t mean you’re not aligned,” said one. “It just means you’re also respecting personal space and freedom. That’s not division. That’s balance.”
Another person’s comment was more direct: “Scary that someone running a matchmaking firm has such a shallow view of how relationships work.”
Still, others sided with Kapoor’s concern, viewing the bill-splitting rigor as a possible red flag for a lack of emotional (and financial) intimacy.
“It’s like doing revenue-sharing in a friendship,” one user quipped.
Whether this couple is redefining 21st-century relationship dynamics or simply overthinking the grocery bill, the incident has clearly struck a chord across social media.
As for the couple in question, they haven’t commented. But if their flair for record-keeping is anything to go by, they probably have it filed in a shared Google Drive folder.
Love may be priceless, but sometimes sharing the bills can give a sense of responsibility and contribution because they both are equally important in the relationship.
