CarPal was founded in 2017 by Vignesh Ramakrishnan, in an era in which people relied on and believed in offline car buying and selling processes. He boldly launched a platform providing an all-in-one online platform to replace traditional car dealerships. The Journey from a Mechanical Engineer to an Entrepreneur
Vignesh Venkatakrishnan Ramakrishnan, after getting his degree in mechanical engineering from Sastra University, Thanjavur, was so intrigued and had lots of information about cars, that he started blogging about the same in 2011. This brought him widespread recognition.
He started working at Mahindra & Mahindra and managed 3-wheeler platforms. He provided insights into product development at his job. However, his passion was somewhere else. Yes, cars. After working for 3 years in Mahindra & Mahindra, Vignesh decided to quit his job and start providing automobile-related solutions.
This is when the idea came to him; why not use this knowledge to help people make decisions in car purchasing.
CarMatch: The 1st Phase
Eventually, in 2016, he started an app called CarMatch. As per the user’s preferences, the application recommended cars.
Its concept was welcomed by the users but due to lack of business model scalability, the app couldn’t perform well.
Realizing the Gap in Market
We all know the traditional and decades old method of buying and selling cars. We visit local showrooms -> Negotiate for better prices with different dealers -> Choose the vehicle -> Select the most ideal and cost-effective deal.

The only thing that changed, now we have a couple more options in car, so we take test drives of 4 or 5 cars before closing the deal.
Realizing the set pattern, and the requirement of better advice while purchasing the vehicle, Vignesh started the CarPal platform after quitting his job.

Later on, in 2017, Vignesh decided to change CarMatch to CarPal, which will be a platform where cars will be directly sold to customers. Thus, dealers would be eliminated from the picture and customers would be sole decision makers.
The New Business Model
Unlike other lead generation platforms, CarPal provides complete online car buying solutions. Most importantly, it does not own any inventory. But this does not affect its effective operational efficiency. WHY? HOW?
Simple, by allowing customers to find the right car through their platform, make the purchase, and get the delivery at their place.
The platform partners with insurers, finance providers and used car dealers to provide the required services related to the car buying process.
Challenges and Solutions
Offering a competitive service in the car industry, obviously was seen as a huge threat to offline dealers and the car sale market. Even financial operations were being disrupted as banks weren’t sure if they should classify CarPal as a dealer or not.
Furthermore, convincing customers to buy cars online was a huge struggle in itself. Then, there were logistical and vehicle registration challenges.
CarPal’s team decided not to give up and dedicatedly worked their way out. With its resilience and commitment to innovation, the startup is now recognized as a trusted name in the industry.

In January 2025, CarPal Select is being launched. The platform is collaborating with 5 leading car brands. The new platform will be offering exclusive benefits like buy-back options, which will be its distinct feature. Through this, the founders aim to further enhance the appeal of the app.
Future Plans
While working with a unique approach, Vignesh is prioritizing scalable and profitable model growth which can be replicated globally. He is planning to go international after dominating the Indian car industry. All this, while maintaining trust and continuing innovative approaches.
